Health, Young People

Spotlight on:
Young People and Mental Health

Our brand new format
I've been a fan of comics my whole life - and I particularly respect the genre's capacity to take on difficult stories. It can provide anonymity for people, or allow us to travel places, see sights and understand issues in a way we might not have otherwise. Right now, there are a lot of difficult stories - particularly because our human rights are under attack, and we need to see plainly what's at stake if we allow them to be taken away. There are so many issues but this year on Human Rights Day and for the holiday season, we wanted to focus on the impact of different factors on young people's mental health. I started talking to these young people over a year ago when we started the first comic project last summer. Every single young person I spoke to wanted to make a difference by sharing their stories, their experiences. They all hoped that someone else, someone like them who might read their story would not be so alone. Help us get these stories out there further by sharing the comic around, it could just be seen by someone who really needs to see it.
Sarah Wishart, Creative Director of EachOther

Mental health is a human right. The young people’s stories in these comic strips bring it unforgettably to life.

These comic strips are an important snapshot of a moment in time. We want these comic strips to help people seek support if they need it, and know where to go for it.

“If I could speak to a person who is feeling like I felt, I would advise you to get help before it gets to the point where you can’t.”

"Don't give up on education. Give yourself as many opportunities as you can."

We always love to try new methods of storytelling, and comics allow us to tell rich, nuanced, sensitive stories in a way that's not only accessible, but also incredibly visually striking.

"If I were in charge I'd like to get people to look at alternative ways to deal with things. I know it's different for everyone."

The release of our first comic strip is really exciting because it gives us another avenue to start conversations about difficult subjects and themes which might otherwise not have best suited film; it’s one more way we can tell others’ stories that are important to share.

"It makes you feel like you're part of something, that you're not the only one struggling in this way and that there are others out there too."

I'm so excited to see EachOther's next creative exploration take flight. We're always looking to expand the ways in which we share human rights issues with our audience and I think the comic strip will blow them away. It's a beautiful creation and it tells the story of young people and their mental health rights in an engaging way

"My perspective is that if you make skilled work attractive then people don't go down other roads. Learn, train up, build things, fix things, expand your horizons."

"I've learnt that it's not the case of trying to get over things, but more about understanding what isn't working, and trying to work on that. Or if things are playing on your mind, finding ways to manage it."
