[Text on screen]: Your rights explained.

Article 14 of the  European Convention on Human Rights: No discrimination.

Article 14 protects us against discrimination. This means you cannot be denied your rights because of your gender, race, religion…anything!

It ensures everyone is treated equally by the law and by the government.

Three key things that it does for us:

1. Immigration rules can’t be sexist (The Abdulaziz case, 1986)
2. The armed forces can’t ban gay people (The Smith & Grady case, 1999)
3. Your rights are protected no matter who you are (The Ghaidan case, 2004)

Why is it needed now?

The UK population is diverse.

[Animated graph showing people in the UK by sex, age and ethnic group, 2011]:

87% white
7% Asian or Asian British
3: Black or Black British
2% mixed
1% other

Our human rights are hard-won.

Know your rights. Celebrate them. Protect them.
