Amika George: So I read about this issue of period poverty and it was something I'd never heard of before. I started to do some research and asked my friends and family about it. And I realised that it was just this huge hidden problem no one was talking about. When girls are routinely missing school for a week, every single month, just because they can't afford sanitary products, it can have a huge impact on their dignity, self-esteem, and also their confidence.

I read about girls who have had to make their own horrible alternatives, using tissue or socks or sleeves of old t-shirts. I've also read about teachers having to spend money out of their own pocket to try and give girls the sanitary products that they so desperately need. Everyone thinks that when you're when your period you're unclean, and it's bit gross, and no one really wants to talk about them. I think it's ridiculous that we only ever talk about periods when we're saying that they're disgusting or you're on your time of the month or something like that, and that's just awful. I think this is a really, really serious issue, and period poverty is something that's very real and happening right now in the UK and that's something that everyone needs to open their eyes to.
