Women in the UK have had the right to vote for almost 100 years.

But it only happened because of fearless campaigning by the Suffragettes and others.

Key moments in the battle for women’s rights to vote:

1869- Some women taxpayers were given the vote in local elections.

1897- National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies formed.

1900 - Over 1 million women register for local government elections.

1905- Militant campaign by ‘Suffragettes’ begins with some campaigners sent to prison.

1909- First hunger strikes by suffragettes. Forcible feeding introduced.

1913- Suffragette Emily Davison dies after stepping in front of the King’s horse at the Epsom Darby.

1918- Women over age 30 with property able to vote in national elections.

1928- Women given full rights to vote in national and local elections.
