Andy Lawrence has been teaching history since 2004. He established the pupil campaign group Genocide80Twenty after a student asked what had happened in Rwanda in 1994 and why he and his friends had never been taught about it. In his time at Hampton, Andy has run several large-scale genocide education and awareness events involving schools across London, survivors and practitioners - all passionate about raising awareness in younger generations. Under his aegis, pupils have published a wide range of literature and online content and their campaigns have been recognised by leading figures globally. The Genocide80Twenty group has collaborated on projects with more than a hundred other school groups around the world. Hampton School was originally awarded ‘Beacon Status’ by UCL’s Centre for Holocaust Education in 2016. In 2022, the School was once again recognised for its exceptional teaching of the Holocaust and other genocides and awarded a ‘Quality Mark’. In their report, the Centre for Holocaust Education described Mr Lawrence as a ‘leading figure nationally and internationally in Holocaust education’.
