[Text on screen]: Ever wondered about your human rights – what they are and how they are protected?

The European Convention on Human Rights is an international treaty, signed after World War II.

It was created in response to the atrocities caused by dictatorial regimes in the 20th Century.

It contains a list of human rights and basic freedoms, fundamental to living a dignified life...

Like the right to life, which means that we cannot be unlawfully killed by the state.

Freedom from torture, inhuman and degrading treatment, which protects our dignity.

Freedom from slavery and forced labour, which protects vulnerable people from exploitation.

The right to liberty, so that we may not be unlawfully detained.

The right to a fair trial, to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The right not to be punished for acts that were not, at the time committed, criminal offences.

The right to respect for your private and family life, home and correspondence.

Freedom of thought, conscience and religion, which protects your right to hold certain beliefs.

Freedom of expression, which allows you to receive and share ideas.

Freedom of association, which protects your right to take part in peaceful demonstrations.

The right to marry whom you like and to start a family together.

Freedom from discrimination, including on the grounds of race, gender and sexual orientation.

The right not to be arbitrarily deprived of your property.

The right to education, including equality in education.

The right to take part in free and fair elections as part of the democratic process.

And the right to an effective remedy if your human rights are violated.

These rights were hard won.

A victory for those who fought and died to protect our liberties.

In the aspirations of human rights laws like the European Convention on Human Rights…we see the best of humanity.

Know your rights. Celebrate them. Protect them.

Blow out the candles, European Convention on Human Rights!

Protecting the rights of more than 800 million people is a tough job, but the European Convention is just as important now as it ever has been. As we celebrate this historic event, it’s important to remember why the convention was established in the first place, and we’re here to tell you why.

EachOther is a UK-focused charity that uses independent journalism, story-telling and film-making to put the human into human rights. The digital content we produce is grounded in the lived experience of ordinary people affected by human rights issues. We involve them in the process of developing their stories, rather than talking for or over them. Theirs are the voices we platform and amplify to our lay audience of over a million viewers each year. In this way, we hope to grow public support for human rights here in the UK.
