A new report says the Home Office is failing in its treatment of torture victims.

Freedom From Torture say we can do a lot better.

Here are the five key takeaways from the report:

1. Medical evidence of torture is often ignored in asylum claims

Home Office caseworkers instead rely on their own ‘clinical’ opinions.

2. Many torture victims are wrongly refused asylum

This can cause severe psychological trauma.

3. These failures are expensive for the taxpayer

Wrong decisions lead to long and costly appeals.

4. The Home Office is breaching its human rights obligations

The European Convention on Human Rights and UN Convention Against Torture may be violated

5. The Home Office is breaching its own policy

But the policy is poorly enforced

So what can we do about it?

Freedom From Torture say people should email their MP

They also say we need better training for Home Office caseworkers

And an independent inquiry into how asylum claims are handled.
